The Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba (population 569,000, capital of Mato Grosso) was inaugurated during the match between Santos and Atlético Mineiro (1-2), on 18/05/2014.

The first match took place while the stadium was still under construction. The installation of temporary stands and areas around the stadium had not been completed. A worker was electrocuted and died on the construction site on 08/05/2014. The work was not interrupted in order to deliver the 42,900-seat stadium in time for the World Cup. A fire damaged facilities and delayed construction in October 2013.

The cost is estimated at 570m reais (€188m). The project is entirely funded by Mato Grosso state, which has received a loan of 339m reais (€112m) from the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development). The stadium is currently operated by local authorities, but it is to be ceded to a private operator after the World Cup.

After the competition, the temporary stands are to be removed to reduce the stadium's capacity to 25,000. The city of Cuiaba doesn't have any teams in the first two professional divisions.
