FC Barcelona: Josep Maria Bartomeu, president since 2014, resigns along with the board of directors

Josep Maria Bartomeu has announced his resignation as well as that of the entire board of directors of FC Barcelona (LaLiga Santander), of which he had been president since January 2014, on 27/10/2020.

A vote of censure against the man who was serving his second term at the helm of Barça had been in progress. The opposition, which required at least 16,521 votes from socios/members (15% of those of voting age) before a referendum could be held, eventually produced 19,532. Discussions between the club's board and the Generalitat de Catalunya (regional government) had intensified over the last few days to define the modalities for organising this referendum, the holding of which had been made difficult by measures linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We cannot nor want to put ourselves in a position of having to choose between protecting people's health and exercising the right to vote. For that reason we have taken the decision to not call the vote and resign forthwith," declared Josep Maria Bartomeu in a speech that served as a review (see below).
