Super League project: Barça has already agreed according to J.M. Bartomeu, UEFA "strongly opposed"

A European Super League or "European Premier League" with 16 or 18 big clubs that would be played throughout the season in two-legged matches before the top eight clubs compete in a specific venue for the final stage (similar to the "Final 8" that served as the epilogue to the 2019-20 Champions League in Portugal in August 2020), is a project that could begin in 2022 or 2024, according to Spanish media on 28/10/2020.

"The board of directors (of FC Barcelona, LaLiga Santander) have approved the acceptance of requirements to take part in a future European Super League of clubs, a project put forward by the biggest clubs in Europe," said Josep Maria Bartomeu, who announced his resignation as president of the Catalan club on 27/10/2020.

"The details of these requirements will be made available to the next board, and the decision about participation in this competition shall have to be ratified by the next assembly of delegate members," said Bartomeu adding that the new League would "change in an extraordinary way the future revenue of the club for the years to come."
