Covid-19: LaLiga to compensate broadcasters up to 5% (around €100m) for 2019-20 TV rights (press)

LaLiga will compensate its broadcasters up to 5% for the audiovisual rights of the 2019-20 season impacted by Covid-19 (the league had been suspended for three months before its resumption on 11/06/2020), according to Spanish press on 10/11/2020.

LaLiga was expected to collect a record €2.117bn in TV rights for the 2019-20 season according to Spanish media, the impact would therefore be around €100m. The Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica (main broadcaster) and the Spanish audiovisual group Mediapro hold the domestic broadcasting rights to LaLiga Santander and LaLiga Smartbank for around €1.2bn per season over the 2019-2022 cycle (see details below). Mediapro also markets LaLiga's international rights for which nearly 70 agreements have been concluded around the world.

The impact of this discount could be spread over two seasons (2020-21 and 2021-22) depending on the current contracts with the various broadcasters.
