The Organizing Committee for the Tokyo (JPN) 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games estimates the cost of the measures to be put in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic at around JPY100bn (€800m), according to the Japanese agency Kyodo News on 30/11/2020.

The postponement of the Games, planned for 2021, will increase the total cost of the Olympics by some JPY200bn (healthcare and screening infrastructures and enhanced site security), according to Kyodo News, and the Organizing Committee, the City of Tokyo and the Japanese government must now determine what share of this additional burden each of them will have to bear. These three stakeholders are due to express their views on the measures they intend to put in place to combat Covid-19 on 02/12/2020.

The fourth and final version of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee's budget for 20/12/2019 was JPY630bn (€5.17bn). The total cost of the event is JPY1,350bn (€11bn), of which JPY747bn (€6.1bn) will be borne by the Japanese State and the City of Tokyo (see details below).
