"It has become one of the most prevalent topics in professional sports media: multi-club ownership, in many cases, has been deemed as a business model that may dominate the next chapter of world football. However, while multi-club portfolios offer much appeal, such complex ownership structures also pose special risks and should only be pursued and implemented if they provide the best approach for achieving the goals of the shareholders," states a study entitled "Multi-club ownerships - Is it the future of football?" published by KPMG, an international network of audit and consultancy firms, on 01/12/2020.

In this study, KPMG looks at the model and functioning of several club networks, notably City Football Group (CFG), an investment holding company in football assets (professional clubs, infrastructures, innovation) which groups together a total of 10 clubs, including four in Europe: Manchester City FC (Premier League), Lommel SK (Belgian 2nd division), Girona FC (LaLiga SmartBank) and Espérance Sportive Troyes Aube Champagne (Ligue 2 BKT).
