Bundesliga TV rights: "We have won the dispute" with Eurosport "comprehensively" (C. Seifert, DFL)

"We have won the legal dispute (against the pay-TV group Eurosport) comprehensively, the money is flowing," said Christian Seifert, CEO of the DFL, on 07/12/2020.

Eurosport had unilaterally terminated its contract with the DFL concerning the Bundesliga broadcasting rights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (45 matches per season organised by the DFL, of which 40 are Bundesliga matches), during the German championship's suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic (between 14/03 and 16/05/2020), citing a case of force majeure. A German court of arbitration invalidated the termination on 13/08/2020.

Following the termination of Eurosport, the German League had entered into live agreements with DAZN and Amazon to co-broadcast the matches in the package acquired by Eurosport for the end of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season behind closed doors (from 16/05 to 27/06/2020).

DAZN entered into a sub-licensing agreement with Eurosport to recover these broadcasting rights for the 2020-21 season on 26/08/2020. DAZN is paying approximately half, or €40m, of the amount paid by Eurosport to the DFL (€80m)…
