Sponsorship: Antoine Griezmann ends partnership with Huawei (smartphones) in support of the Uyghurs

"Following strong suspicions that the Huawei (smartphones, China) company has contributed to the development of a 'Uyghur (Muslim ethnic minority from the Xinjiang region, China) alarm' thanks to facial recognition software, I am announcing that I am putting an immediate end to my partnership binding me to this company," announced Antoine Griezmann (FRA, FC Barcelona) on his social networks on 10/12/2020.

"I take this opportunity to invite Huawei not to just deny these accusations but to take concrete action as quickly as possible to condemn this mass repression and use its influence to contribute to respect for human and women's rights within society," said the French international, who had been partnered with the Chinese company since March 2017.

Huawei is suspected of having worked in 2018 with Chinese start-up Megvii, specialised in facial recognition, and contributed to the development of video surveillance software capable of sending alerts to the Chinese police when a person belonging to the Uyghur people is detected, according to the American daily newspaper the Washington…
