Liverpool FC: club pays tribute to "treble-winning" manager Gérard Houllier (1947-2020)

"Liverpool FC is mourning the passing of former manager Gérard Houllier, aged 73. The Frenchman was in charge of the Reds for six seasons, leading his team to an historic and unforgettable treble of League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup (former name of the Europa League) in 2000-01 and returning the club to the Champions League," said the club following his death a few days after undergoing a new aortic operation, on Monday 14/12/2020.

"Houllier's affiliation with Liverpool began long before he was recruited by the club as he worked as a teacher in the city during the 1960s, first taking in a Reds match on the Kop in 1969," explained the Reds. 

Gérard Houllier began managing the Merseyside club in 1998 as joint manager alongside Roy Evans, and played a pivotal role in the clubs success until his departure in 2004. During his time at the club, the Frenchman underwent major heart surgery during the 2001-02 season before returning as manager guiding the club to a second League Cup trophy in 2003.
