"I focus on football. Some people focus on something else," said Michel Platini, UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) president and FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) vice-president, on 05/06/2014 in response to the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, which on 03/06/2014 accused him of being influenced in the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. "I realise that behind this all there is someone, something, people who are organising it all ... I can sense it," said Platini.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Mohammed Bin Hammam (Qatar), the former vice-president of FIFA, influenced Platini's vote during a secret meeting in November 2010. "By having breakfast with a work colleague, I now find myself in a government conspiracy built from the ground up by I don't know who for I don't know what purpose," Platini told the sports newspaper L'Equipe on 05/06/2014. "I feel like I must be bothering someone," added the president of UEFA, who had previously denied the accusations via a statement released 03/06/2014.
