LFP: "With me, the Championship would not have stopped" (F. Thiriez, candidate for FFF president)

“With me, the Championship would not have stopped (prematurely, in 2019-20). Why has France stopped its Championships while all the surrounding countries have continued theirs? There is something inexplicable here," stated Frédéric Thiriez, former president of the French Professional Football League, to RTL radio on 19/12/2020.

The LFP board of directors definitively stopped the 2019-20 season of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 on 30/04/2020, 48 hours after Édouard Philippe, then French Prime Minister excluded the resumption of "the professional sports season, in particular football" because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The clubs had then played 28 out of 38 matches (73.6%) of the season, except RC Strasbourg Alsace and Paris Saint-Germain who had only played 27 (see final points-per-game ranking below).
