Germany: Public broadcasters ARD and ZDF acquire TV rights to World Cup 2022

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF have purchased the rights to broadcast the 2022 World Cup (Qatar) in Germany, announced the executive committee of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), which met in Sao Paulo (BRA) on 07/06/2014.

Neither the platforms nor the amount of the acquisition were specified by FIFA nor by the two broadcasters. In April 2012, ARD and ZDF acquired the German broadcast rights for the 2018 World Cup (Russia) for an estimated €200m.

ARD and ZDF share broadcasting of the 64 games of the 2014 World Cup (Brazil, from 12/06 to 13/07/2014), with 32 games for each channel. ZDF will broadcast the opening match of the World Cup, Brazil-Croatia, on 12/06/2014 and the match for third place on 12/07/2014. The next day, ARD will broadcast the final.

ARD also rebroadcast the three matches of the German team in the group stage. ZDF will have priority in case of qualification of the German selection for the round of 16, ARD for the round of eight and ZDF again for the semi-finals.
