Formula 1: an average of 87.4 million viewers per Grand Prix during the 2020 season (-4.5%)

1.5 billion cumulative television viewers watched the 2020 Formula One season, 21% fewer than the previous season (1.9 billion), according to Formula One Group 08/02/2021. The number of unique viewers was 433 million.

"This reduction is a result of the fact we had 17 races last season compared to 21 races in 2019. It does not reflect a drop off in audiences in general but is a result of fewer races and therefore fewer events to watch on TV," explained the body. The average audience per Grand Prix was 87.4 million viewers, 4.5% less than in 2019. The 2016, 2017 and 2018 editions had an average audience of 87 million viewers.

"Formula 1 has made significant gains across digital, making us the second fastest growing major sports league on the planet across the four major social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube)," added Formula One Group (see below).
