Union Berlin (2.Bundesliga, Germany's second division) is allowing football fans to install their sofas for free on the grass of the An der Alten Försterei stadium (capacity 21,738) in order to watch the 2014 World Cup (Brazil, 12/06 to 13/07/2014) matches in front of a large screen. Living-room-style decor has been set up covering 3,500 m² around the screen.

780 sofas were arranged on the field for the opening match of Brazil-Croatia (3-1) on 12/06/2014, the club said. 12,000 fans watched the match from Union Berlin's stadium, including 3000 on the ground.

The initiative was funded by seven local businesses and organised by Berlin Compact Team.

  • The city of Paris will install a giant screen in front of City Hall (1st district) for the 2014 World Cup if the French team qualifies for the round of 16, Bruno Julliard, first deputy mayor of Paris, said on 12/06/2014.
