Cristiano Ronaldo second-most-highly paid athlete in world at €59.04m, according to Forbes

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) is the second-most-highly paid athlete in the world; he was paid a total of $80m (€59.04m) from 01/06/2013 to 01/06/2014, according to Forbes magazine on 10/05/2014. In first was American boxer Floyd Mayweather who, with two fights scheduled in this period (wins against Canelo Alvarez of Mexico on 15/09/2013 and against Marcos Maidana of Argentina on 03/05/2014), took in $105m (€77.57m)

Cristiano Ronaldo took in $52m (€38.4m) in salary and bonuses and $28m (€20.67m) in commercial revenue, according to Forbes. The player extended his contract for three seasons, until 2018, with Real Madrid on 15/09/2013. Reportedly, his net annual salary will be €17m.

The striker is under contract with sponsors, notably the kit supplier Nike, Emirates Airlines, the electronics group Samsung and the watchmaker Tag Heuer, the latter with which he formalised an agreement on 28/04/2014. He is the highest-paid footballer, ahead of Argentina's Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona), the fourth highest-paid athlete, making $64.7m (€47.77m), said Forbes.
