Portugal: centralised sale of TV rights for the 1st and 2nd football divisions from 2028-29

The Portuguese government has adopted a decree law making the centralised sale of the broadcasting rights of the first and second divisions of the Portuguese football championships compulsory "after the 2027-28 season" (from the 2028-29 season), according to Portuguese press on 01/03/2021.

The Liga NOS is indeed an exception among the main European football leagues since the clubs individually manage the marketing of their broadcasting rights. The three most popular clubs (FC Porto, SL Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal) receive more than 90% of the revenue.

• The broadcasting rights for SL Benfica are held by the telecommunications operator NOS for a maximum period of 10 years (2016-2026) and for an amount of up to €400m, or €40m per season.
• Sporting's rights are also held by NOS for €515m (including the club's shirt sponsorship rights) over the 2018-2028 period, i.e. €51.5m per season.
• FC Porto's TV rights are held by the telecommunications operator Altice Portugal (a subsidiary of Altice Europe), for €457.5m (€45.75m per season) for the 2018-2028 period.
