CAF/elections: Patrice Motsepe (RSA), the sole presidential candidate after his 3 rivals withdraw

Patrice Motsepe, a 59-year-old South African billionaire (born 28/01/1962), and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns FC (Pretoria, RSA), is expected to become the seventh president of CAF at the 43rd elective general assembly scheduled to take place in Rabat (Morocco) on Friday 12/03/2021. He will then be the first Anglophone to head the body created in 1957 and based in Cairo (Egypt).

His three rivals, Augustin Senghor (Senegal), Jacques Anouma (Ivory Coast), and Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania) withdrew their bids following the "Rabat protocol" discussed during the weekend of 27 and 28/02/2021 and endorsed in Nouakchott (Mauritania) on 06/03/2021.

Under the agreement, Augustin Senghor is to become first vice-president of CAF and Ahmed Yahya second vice-president, while an advisory post is expected to be given to Jacques Anouma, who judged the agreement "not too democratic" on 02/03/2021.
