Spain: RTVE acquires free-to-air rights to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games from Discovery

The Spanish public broadcasting group RTVE has acquired, via a sublicense from the American broadcasting group Discovery, the free-to-air broadcasting rights (400 hours of live and deferred programming) to the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games (postponed by one year, from 23/07 to 08/08/2021) for Spain, on 12/03/2021.

RTVE will broadcast the competition on the general interest channel La 1, on the thematic channel Teledeporte and on its digital platform "a la carta". Radio rights for RNE are also included in the agreement.

Discovery (parent company of the pay-TV group Eurosport) holds the broadcasting rights in Europe (excluding Russia) to the Summer and Winter Olympic Games until 2024. The group has sublicensing agreements with free-to-air broadcasters in most territories (Discovery also owns free-to-air channels in some of them).
