Italy: AC Cesena promoted to Serie A after Serie B playoffs

AC Cesena were promoted to Serie A (first Italian division) for the 2014-15 season after a 2-1 victory against US Latina in the second-leg Serie B playoffs on 18/06/2014. AC Cesena won the first leg by the same score on 15/06/2014.

"Aisèm" ("We made it!" in the Romagnol language) the club said on its website; after two seasons in Serie B, AC Cesena will move to the top league, as will USC Palermo (Serie B champions in 2013 -14) and Empoli FC (2nd in Serie B).

AC Cesena finished 4th in the regular season of Serie B and were among the six clubs to qualify for the playoffs. The six in order are: US Latina (3rd), AC Cesena (4th), the Modena FC (5th) and FC Crotone (6th), AS Bari (7th) and Spezia Calcio (8th).

After a knockout match between the teams ranked from 5th to 8th (Bari-Crotone, 3-0; and Modena-Spezia Calcio 1-0), AC Cesena eliminated Modena FC (0-1, 1-1) in the semifinal and US Latina took out AS Bari (2-2, 2-2) thanks to their higher ranking at the end of the championship.

The 2014-15 Serie A season will start on 31/08/2014 and end on 31/05/2015.
