CAF: "An African team must win the World Cup in the near future" (P. Motsepe)

"There is no continent that has succeeded by dwelling on its failures. An African team must win the World Cup in the near future. We have to stop being pessimistic. It is important to identify our weaknesses and failures, and we will correct them," said Patrice Motsepe, CAF president, in Johannesburg (South Africa) on 16/03/2021.

"The future of the most continental organization is optimism, a positive attitude. We can and will succeed," said the new president of the Confederation of African Football during his first speech in his native country since his election in Rabat (Morocco) on 12/03/2021.

• No African team has reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in the 21 editions played since 1930 (African nations have been present only 14 times out of 21).
• Only Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010) have reached the quarterfinals.
• During the last edition, in Russia in 2018, the five qualified African teams - Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia - were all eliminated at the end of the group stage.
