IOC: Japan Consortium extends broadcasting rights for $1bn for 2018-2024 period

Japan Consortium, which brings together Japanese television channel NHK and the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (JBA), has acquired the exclusive rights for Japanese broadcasting of the Olympic Games for the 2018-2024 period, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) stated on 19/06/2014. These rights went for $1bn (about €734m) and cover television, radio, internet and mobile devices.

The amount of broadcast rights increased by 61% from 2012-2018; Japan Consortium is paying $625m (about €459m) to show the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (RUS) and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro (BRA).

The rights just acquired by the Japan Consortium include the broadcasting of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang (South Korea), 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (Japan) and 2022 (winter) and 2024 (summer) editions whose hosts have not yet been chosen. The 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires (Argentina) will also be broadcast.
