Tennis / Wimbledon: a profit of £4.6m in 2020 for AELTC thanks to pandemic insurance of £174m

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), organiser of the Wimbledon grand slam tournament, posted a turnover of £3.81m as of 31/07/2020 (€4.2m, compared to £292m in 2019) in its annual accounts published on 17/04/2021.

While the Wimbledon Tournament 2020, initially scheduled from 29/06 to 12/07/2020, was canceled on 01/04/2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the organising body nevertheless posted a positive operating profit of £40.45m (€44.6m) and a profit of £4.6m (€5m), substantially equivalent to that of 2019 (£4.8m).

The exceptional scenario of cancellation due to a pandemic was indeed covered by insurance, allowing AELTC to obtain compensation of £174m (€192m). "£157m was received during the year. A amount of £17m, was agreed post year and was accrued. As of 15/10/2020 the final claim amount was still to be agreed with the insurers," explained AELTC in its accounts.

• The 2021 edition of Wimbledon is scheduled from Monday 28/06 to Sunday 11/07/2021.
