Australia: Sports Flick backtracks on Champions League TV rights over bank guarantee, "uncertainty"

The Australian start-up Sports Flick (OTT sports platform) announced that it is unable to finalise the acquisition of the rights to broadcast the Champions League, in Australia, over the 2021-2024 period, on the 19/04/2021.

"Sports Flick confirm it will not be seeking to finalise its UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Europa Conference League bids for the 2021-24 seasons. Sports Flick have been issued with a Bank Guarantee for the media rights by an Australian Financial Institution. Sports Flick were contacted by UEFA representatives and given the opportunity to complete the media rights agreement yesterday. In light of the current uncertainty in European Football, the Directors and Shareholders have made the decision not to proceed and provide the necessary contractual items to complete the deal at this time," stated Sports Flick.

According to Australian press, Sports Flick had difficulty obtaining the bank guarantee requested by UEFA, even before the announcement of the creation of a Super League
