UEFA: adoption of 2024-25 Champions League format overshadowed by Super League project

36 clubs instead of 32, a format of 10 games instead of 6 before reaching the Round of 16, 10 different opponents (5 at home and 5 away) instead of paired home-away matches in groups of four, two places reserved for otherwise unqualified teams on the basis of sporting results over the five previous seasons, these are the main changes introduced for the Champions League from the 2024-25 season that the meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee adopted in Montreux (Vaud, SUI), on 19/04/2021.

"To ensure that this new format will deliver the best for clubs, players, and fans, UEFA based its design on in-depth consultations with key players in the European football community. The reforms received the unanimous support of the ECA Executive Board of and the UEFA Club Competitions Committee (made up of a majority of club representatives)," the European body said on 20/04/2021.

The adoption of these changes to the Champions League was, however, overshadowed by the announcement of a European Super League project by 12 major European clubs (6 English, 3 Spanish, and 3 Italian) on 18/04/2021.
