"I cannot imagine that the Super League will ever exist" (K-H Rummenigge, FC Bayern Munich)

"With the debacle that has taken place throughout this week, I cannot imagine that the Super League will ever exist," said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of the board of FC Bayern Munich (Bundesliga), to the French sports daily L'Equipe on 23/04/2021.

The former chairman of the European Club Association (2008-2017), now honorary chairman, reacted to the Super League project initiated by 12 member clubs of the ECA (6 English, 3 Spanish, and 3 Italian), among which Juventus FC (Serie A TIM), whose chairman Andrea Agnelli was also chairman of the association until his resignation on 19/04/2021 (Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, president of Paris Saint-Germain, succeeded him at the head of the ECA on 21/04/2021). This semi-closed league project has come to a halt due to the withdrawal of 10 clubs - including the six from the Premier League - in less than three days, a consequence of very negative reactions from fans, authorities, stakeholders in the ecosystem, as well as in the political world.
