Brazil 2014: Luis Suarez (URU) gets nine-match suspension, four-month ban from football activities

The Uruguayan player Luis Suarez is suspended for nine games and banned from four months of "football-related activities" by the Disciplinary Committee of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), FIFA said on 26/06/2014.

FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Luis Suarez, who was accused of biting Giorgio Chiellini (ITA) in the 80th minute of the Italy - Uruguay match (0-1, Group D, Natal), 24/06/2014. Luis Suarez (URU) was not penalised during the match by Mexican referee Marco Rodrigues.

The Uruguayan also landed a 100,000 Swiss franc (€82,221) fine, and a stadium ban for four months and for the next nine matches of his national team.

  • Following the match, Uruguay (2nd in group D with six points) qualified for the competition's round of 16. Italy (3rd with 3 points) were eliminated.
