TV rights: "The irruption of OTT platforms is bringing a decline in revenues" (Javier Tebas, LaLiga)

"The irruption of new over-the-top (OTT) platforms is bringing a decline in revenue (referring to the emergence of platforms such as Eleven or DAZN) and makes negotiations with companies such as Telefónica (Spanish telecommunications operator) more complicated," said Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga to the news agency Europa Press, on 11/05/2021.

The domestic broadcasting rights to LaLiga are currently held by Telefonica and the Spanish audiovisual group Mediapro for approximately €1.14bn per season over the 2019-2022 cycle. The International rights have been renewed by Mediapro, over the 2019-2024 cycle, for an average of €897m per season. TV rights account for 58% of LaLiga's total revenue.

Since the Covid-19 crisis, LaLiga has seen a drop in overall revenue of €2.013bn but also a drop in expenditure of €984m. "LaLiga will be the European Top 5 competition that emerges from this crisis with the best result," said Javier Tebas.
