Brazil 2014: World Cup now at 1bn Facebook interactions

The 2014 World Cup (in Brazil from 12/06 to 13/07/2014) has had 1bn interactions (posts, comments and "likes") from 220m people on the social network Facebook from 12 to 29/06/2014, according to Facebook data acquired by the international news agency Reuters and published on 29/06/2014. In passing 1bn interactions, the Brazilian World Cup has become most popular event in the history of the social network.

The 1bn-interaction bar was passed during the round of 16 match between Brazil and Chili (1-1, 3-2 after penalties, Belo Horizonte, on 28/06/2014), which saw 31m people exchange 75m interactions.

According to Reuters, new records should be broken in the remaining two weeks of competition. "People are having conversations on Facebook about what they watch in a really unprecedented scale. In addition to sharing and connecting with friends, people are engaging in real time with the media and the public voices they care about most," said Nick Grudin, Facebook’s director of partnerships on 29/06/2014.
