The new president of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) will be elected at the next general assembly, which is scheduled for 11/08/2014, the federal council of the FIGC announced on 30/06/2014.

Abete has been president of the Italian federation since 02/04/2007. He announced that he would resign on 25/06/2014, following the elimination of Italy in the group phase of the World Cup (Brazil, 12/06 to 13/07/2014). "This was a decision I had already made before the World Cup, regardless of the result," he said.

"I will do my best to manage the situation as well as possible until 18/08/2014. It is not my intention to abandon ship. I leave with a clear conscience and with the feeling that I did the best I could," said Giancarlo Abete, following the federation board meeting at which he announced his resignation, on 30/06/2014.

Abete has been a vice-president of UEFA's executive committee since 2011 and an executive member of the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) since 2009.

The federal board, under the new FIGC president, will designate a new Italian manager to replace Cesare Prandelli…
