2021 Copa America: CONMEBOL refuses to postpone the competition to November, no matches in Colombia

"For reasons related to the international competition calendar and the logistics of the tournament, it is impossible to transfer the 2021 Copa America to the month of November (2021)," explained CONMEBOL on 21/05/2021. The South American Confederation responded negatively to the request of Colombia, the host country of the competition (from 13/06 to 11/07/2021) alongside Argentina, which will therefore not host any matches.

The Colombian government officially requested the postponement of the 2021 Copa America until November 2021 under pressure from numerous demonstrations organised since 28/04/2021 in the country's main cities - which are also the competition's host cities - as its population is facing a third wave of Covid-19 and thus a health crisis that amplifies the pre-existing economic difficulties. Initially mobilised against a government plan to raise taxes, demonstrators quickly expressed their opposition to hosting the Copa America in the country.
