"For years, when faced with the request to transition to 18 clubs in Ligue 1, there was opposition, and I was part of it. Because 20 clubs mean 20 territories that are concerned, because that means more fans and happiness every week. But today, there is an economic situation and a scenario that forces us to think differently. If we don't reinvent ourselves in the crisis, when will we?" said Jean-Pierre Caillot, president of Stade de Reims and of the Collège de Ligue 1, to News Tank Football on 03/06/2021.

"The LFP general assembly adopted the transition to 18 clubs in Ligue 1 from the 2023-24 season with 97.28% of votes. At the end of the 2022-23 season, the change in format will be implemented by four relegations from Ligue 1 and two promotions to Ligue 2. In order to maintain the number of 20 clubs in Ligue 2, four relegations from Ligue 2 and two promotions from the National will also take place at the end of the 2022-23 season," announced the Ligue de Football Professionnel on 03/06/2021.
