Euro 2020: Germany may withdraw bid in order to "better focus" on Euro 2024

Germany may withdraw its candidacy to host the semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020 at the Allianz Arena (capacity 67,812) in Munich in order to "better focus on Euro 2024," Wolfgang Niersbach, president of the DFB (German Football Association), told the German newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost on 02/07/2014.

Should Germany withdraw, Wembley Stadium (capacity 90,000) in London, the only other candidate, would host the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020. This tournament will be hosted in 13 cities in the 13 countries affiliated with UEFA (Union of European Football Associations).

Niersbach had announced on 20/07/2013 that he hoped to host all 51 games of Euro 2024 in Germany. "I'm sure we can succeed in becoming the host country," he said. Turkey (Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul) also withdrew its bid to host for 2020 in order to have a better chance of hosting the entire Euro 2024 on 25/04/2014.

The 13 host cities for Euro 2020 will be chosen by the UEFA executive committee on 19/09/2014 in Geneva (SUI). The Euro 2024 host country is set to be chosen in 2018.
