Alfredo di Stéfano, honorary president of Real Madrid (Liga) since 2000, died at the age of 88 in Madrid (ESP) on 07/07/2014; he had had a heart attack on 04/07/2014.

The Argentine striker, a naturalised Spanish citizen, won the Ballon d'Or in 1957 and 1959, and scored 418 goals in 510 official games played with Real Madrid from 1953 to 1964, notably winning the first five editions of the European Champion Clubs' Cup (from 1955-56 to 1959-60), later renamed Champions League. He played from 1944 to 1966 for the national teams of Argentina (six caps), Columbia (four caps, not approved by FIFA) and Spain (31 caps).

"The president of Real Madrid C. F., Florentino Pérez, and the club’s Board of Directors would like to express their deepest sympathy and affection to his children, family and friends. Real Madrid C. F. extends these condolences to Madrid fans around the world and anyone who feels moved by the loss of the greatest player of all time," the Madrileño club said on 07/07/2014.
