Euro 2020: "Proud to wear the colours of the rainbow, a symbol that embodies our core values" (UEFA)

"Today, UEFA is proud to wear the colours of the rainbow. It is a symbol that embodies our core values, promoting everything that we believe in - a more just and egalitarian society, tolerant of everyone, regardless of their background, belief or gender," announced the European body on 23/06/2021, displaying its logo in which the red ring has become multicoloured.

The day before, UEFA refused the City of Munich's plan to illuminate the Allianz Arena in the rainbow colours of the LGBT+ community during the Euro 2020 match between Germany and Hungary (Group F, Wednesday 23/06/2021, kick-off 21:00), in order to protest against a law passed in Hungary on 15/06/2021 which prohibits the promotion of pro-homosexuality content in schools. The law is due to come into force on 01/07/2021.

"UEFA, through its statutes, is a politically and religiously neutral organisation. Given the political context of this specific request - a message aiming at a decision taken by the Hungarian national parliament - UEFA must decline this request," said the European Confederation on 22/06/2021.
