Regulations: UEFA abolishes the away goals rule for all club competitions

"The UEFA Executive Committee has today approved a proposal to remove the so-called away goals rule from all UEFA club competitions (men, women and youth) as of the qualifying phases of the 2021-22 competitions," announced the European body on 24/06/2021, which clarified that had followed "the recommendation of the UEFA Club Competitions Committee and the UEFA Women's Football Committee."

The away goals rule was applied to determine the winner of a two-legged knockout match, in cases where both teams had scored the same number of goals in total over the two matches.
• In this case, the team that had scored the greater number of away goals was considered the winner of the tie and qualified for the next round of the competition.
• If both teams had scored the same number of goals at home and away at the end of normal playing time in the second leg, extra time (2 x 15 minutes) was played, followed by a penalty shoot-out if the score was tied at the end of extra time.
