The 860,000 tourists that descended on Fortaleza for six World Cup matches (four group matches, a round of 16, and a quarter-final) have injected 700m reais (approximately €231m) into the local economy, the Brazilian government announced on 07/07/2014.

360,000 people attended the matches at the Arena Castelao (capacity 60,342), for an average of 59,000 fans per game, and 500,000 tourists (about 24,000 per day) gathered for the Fan Fest on the beach of Iracema.

"There is so much legacy [for the city of Fortaleza] that it's difficult to list everything. The biggest legacy is at the social level, generating employment, income and better quality of life for the population. The level of visibility achieved by Fortaleza in Brazil and the world, bringing tourism to its full potential, is something that we need to improve ever more," said Ferruccio Feitosa, Ceará's special World Cup secretary.
