LFP TV rights: Canal+ has notified beIN Sports and LFP of its desire to break the contract (press)

The French pay-TV group Canal+ has written to the LFP to notify it of its intention to withdraw from its contract with the pay-TV group beIN Sports France, which sub-licenses two Ligue 1 Uber Eats matches (on Saturdays at 21:00 and Sundays at 17:00), over the 2020-2024 cycle, for an annual amount of €332m, according to the French sports daily L'Équipe on 13/07/2021.

Canal+, which has sent the French League a copy of the letter it sent to beIN Sports, believes that the latter has not fulfilled its obligations to contest this contract, which is now considered prohibitive, following Amazon's purchase of the rights to Ligue 1 initially held by Mediapro for more than three times less than the amount offered by the Spanish group (€250m vs €780m). As a result, it suspended its contractual obligations to beIN Sports.

beIN Sports did not wish to comment on this information. The group considers that it does not have to pay the €332m. On the one hand because, like Canal+, it considers it to be prohibitive and on the other hand because it considers that the contract between itself and Canal…
