Brazil 2014: Corcovado statue to be lit in finalists' colours, depending on number of tweets

The Christ the Redeemer statue will be illuminated during the final of the 2014 World Cup between Germany and Argentina (at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on 13/07/2014) in the colours of the two countries, with the time for each depending on the number of messages they each receive on the social network Twitter.

Supporters hoping to bathe the Corcovado statue in their teams' colours can tweet hashtag #ArmsWideOpen followed by either #GER or #ARG from 09 up to 12/07/2014, the eve of the final. Some of those tweets will be projected directly on the statue.

"This great initiative comes thanks to the support of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, which manages the iconic monument," said Twitter in a press release on 08/07/2014.

The 38-metre statue looking over Rio de Janeiro's city centre and Maracanã Stadium can also change colours in real time if a large number of tweets are made during the final.
