DFL: 2.Bundesliga clubs to observe a minute's silence for victims of the flooding in Germany

"In commemoration of the victims of the flooding, DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga is recommending that a minute's silence be held at the 2.Bundesliga matches starting the 2021-22 season," announced the Germany body on 20/07/2021. Clubs will also be given the option to wear black armbands for their matches.

Last week days of torrential rainfall over central and western Europe caused rivers to burst their banks and wash away vehicles, buildings and roads. Germany and Belgium were the hardest hit by the floods, which have claimed the lives of around 200 people, with many still missing, and left thousands without electricity, drinking water and gas. On Friday 16/07/2021, the DFL and the DFB announced the creation of a solidarity fund in order to help those effected by the disaster (see below).

"The German language hardly knows any words for the devastation that has been caused," said Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, during a visit to the town of Schuld (Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate, GER) situated on the River Ahr.
