Tokyo 2020: National & Worldwide Olympic Top Partners finance 56% of Organising Committee's budget

The fifth and final version of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee's budget, unveiled on 22/12/2020, shows ¥721bn (€5.7bn) of expenditure for the Organising Committee, financed to the tune of ¥406bn (56%) by sponsorship programmes.

The Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, which will be held without spectators due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will take place on Friday 23/07/2021 (starting at 20:00 local time, 13:00 CET) and the Closing Ceremony on Sunday 08/08/2021 (same time). The competition began on 21/07/2021 for football and softball.

The IOC's fourteen Top Worldwide Olympic Partners (see list below), the highest level in the partnership hierarchy, are contributing ¥56bn (€433m) and the National Partners (for the Japanese market), divided into three categories, are contributing ¥350bn (€2.7bn).

  • The Tokyo Olympic Games were originally due to take place from Friday 24/07 to Sunday 09/08/2020.
    • They have since been rescheduled from Friday 23/07 to Sunday 08/08/2021.
  • The Tokyo Paralympic Games  were originally due to take place from Tuesday 25/08 to Sunday
