Tokyo 2020/Football: eight matches of the men's tournament on the eve of the opening ceremony

Mexico - France (4-1) at the Tokyo Stadium at 17:00 local time (10:00 CET) and Brazil - Germany (4-2) at the International Stadium Yokohama at 20:30 (13:30 CET) were among the first eight matches of the Men's Olympic Football Tournament scheduled on Thursday 22/07/2021 (see details below), on the eve of the Official Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Friday 23/07/2021.

The remaining two matchdays of the group stage are scheduled on Sunday 25 and Wednesday 28/07/2021.

In football, while the women's Olympic teams are the senior teams, the men's teams are made up of players under the age of 23, with the exception of three players per team who may be older.

Composition of the four groups of four teams for the men's tournament:
• Group A: Japan, South Africa, Mexico and France.
• Group B: New Zealand, South Korea, Honduras and Romania.
• Group C: Egypt, Spain, Argentina and Australia.
• Group D: Brazil, Germany, Ivory Coast and Saudi Arabia.

The top two in each group will qualify for the quarter-finals (match schedule available to download).
