Euro 2020: UEFA welcomes preventative measures against match-fixing

Raising awareness of the problem of match-fixing, building the capacity of stakeholders in the field - from the football community to law enforcement authorities - and fostering transnational cooperation are the three objectives that UEFA believes it will have achieved at Euro 2020, as "government authorities and the general public are increasingly aware of the risks posed by match-fixing," said the body on 20/07/2021.

The measures taken to prevent match-fixing were based on two main pillars: "education and prevention on the one hand, and monitoring and intelligence on the other," said the European body.

"The anti-match-fixing action plan for Euro 2020 relied on the lessons learned from Euro 2016, as well as on best practices adopted by other organisations for major sports events," added UEFA.

The UEFA executive committee decided to increase the resources invested in the fight against match-fixing and to develop its internal expertise and investigation unit in this area on 11/07/2021.
