Spain: Orange extends its distribution agreement with Telefonica (LaLiga and European Cups)

The Spanish subsidiary of French telecommunications group Orange has extended its distribution agreement with rival Telefonica to distribute its football channels for the 2021-22 season on 29/07/2021. The cost of the agreement is said to be around €300m per year according to Spanish media.

Telefonica owns the broadcasting rights in Spain to LaLiga Santander (9 out of 10 matches) and LaLiga SmartBank (9 out of 11 matches) for nearly €1bn per season (2019-2022 cycle), as well as the rights to the European Cups (Champions League, Super Cup, Europa League and Europa Conference League) over the 2021-2024 cycle for €325m per season.

Vodafone, Spain's third largest telecommunications operator, has repeatedly announced that it will not sign a distribution agreement with Telefonica for these rights.
