Brazil 2014: Germany-Argentina sets new Facebook record with 280m interactions

The 20th World Cup's Germany-Argentina final (1-0 aet at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, 13/07/2014) set a new record for a sports game on the social network Facebook with 280m interactions. The game also generated 32.1m messages on the micro-blogging platform Twitter.

The posts, comments and likes on Facebook were generated by 88m people in the world, including 10.5m in the United States, 10m in Brazil, 7m in Argentina and 5m in Germany. The previous Facebook record for a sports game was the Super Bowl (the final of the National Football League, for American football) on 03/02/2013, which had generated 245m interactions around the world.

The record for the number of tweets during a sports match was set during the Brazil-Argentina semi-final of the 2014 World Cup (1-7 in Belo Horizonte, on 08/07/2014), with 35.6m tweets. However, the Germany-Argentina final established a new record for the number of tweets in a single minute on Twitter with 618,725 messages posted on the micro-blogging platform at the end of the game on 13/07/2014.
