NBA hires Pamela El as chief marketing officer; first black person and first woman in role

Pamela El (USA) was appointed chief marketing officer of the NBA (National Basketball Association, USA) on 09/07/2014. She will be the first black person and first woman in this role.

The position had been vacant since the departure of Rick Welts in 1999. Jamie Gallo (USA), vice-president of the NBA, had been responsible for this area since 2012.

Pamela El will take over the position on 18/08/2014. She will be responsible for brand development, marketing and promotion for the NBA. She has previously, since 2012, been senior vice-president of financial brand marketing for Nationwide Insurance (USA).

14 (20.5%) of the NBA's 68 management positions were occupied by women as of 15/07/2014.

  • The NBA generated $5.5bn (€4.04bn) in revenues in 2013-14, the American media outlet Bloomberg reported on 10/07/2014.
