Brazil 2014: World Cup gets 672m tweets and 3bn Facebook interactions over course of event

The 2014 World Cup (in Brazil, from 12/06/2014 to 13/07/2014) generated 672m tweets on the micro-blogging platform Twitter and 3bn interactions (posts, comments and likes) from 350m people on the social network Facebook.

During the group phase of the 2014 World Cup there were 300m Twitter messages and 1bn interactions on Facebook concerning the event. "It was the highest level of conversation around a single event that we have ever measured," said Nick Grudin, Facebook's director of global media partnerships, on 14/07/2014.

The 20th World Cup's Germany-Argentina final (1-0 aet at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, 13/07/2014) set a new record for a sports game on the social network Facebook with 280m interactions (publications, comments and likes). These interactions were shared by 88m people in the world (including 10.5m in the United States, 10m in Brazil, 7m in Argentina and 5m in Germany).

The previous Facebook record for a sports game was the Super Bowl (the final of the National Football League, for American football) on 03/02/2013, which had generated 245m interactions…
