2021-22 Premier League: attendance for Matchday 1 (37,208 spectators on average per game)

Matchday 1 of the 2021-22 Premier League season drew an average of 37,208 spectators per game, from Friday 13 to Sunday 15/08/2021. The average fill rate was almost 96%. English stadiums are thus full again, as the authorities did not impose any capacity restrictions for the resumption of the English Championship.

Manchester United FC - Leeds United FC (5-1), on Saturday 14/08/2021 (kick-off at 13:30 CET), was the game that posted the best attendance of the matchday with 72,732 spectators at Old Trafford (74,879 capacity) and a 97.1% fill rate.

Premier League clubs posted an average of 40,277 spectators per game on Matchday 1 of the 2019-20 season (almost all of the 2020-21 season was played behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 health crisis), for an average fill rate of 97%.

  • The 20 Premier League clubs posted an average of 39,350 spectators per match in 2019-20 (over 29 matchdays) for a fill rate of almost 98%.
    • The last nine matchdays of the season were all played behind closed doors when the championship resumed in June 2020.
