Tokyo 2020: Olympics postponed to 2021, near total closure and €3bn in additional costs due to Covid

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were ultimately held from Friday 23/07 to Sunday 08/08/2021. Postponed by 52 weeks (364 days) due to the Covid-19 pandemic -the Olympics were originally scheduled to take place from Friday 24/07 to Sunday 09/08/2020-, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games also had to be held, for the same reason, almost entirely behind closed doors.

These Olympics, which featured 339 events and 2,401 medals won by athletes from a record 93 National Olympic Committees (of the 205 in attendance, plus the Olympic refugee team), started as early as 21/07/2021 for football and softball.

The podium of the medal table (see below) is occupied by the United States (113 medals, including 39 gold), China (88, including 38 gold) and Japan (58, including 27 gold). Great Britain finished 4^th with 65 medals, 22 of which were gold. France, on its part, came in 8^th place with 33 medals - nine less than in Rio (BRE) in 2016 - of which 10 were gold.
