NHL: after helmets in 2020-21, jersey sponsorship to be allowed from the 2022-23 season (press)

The National Hockey League (NHL) will allow its 32 franchises to have a jersey sponsor from the 2022-23 season, according to American website Sportico on 17/08/2021.

Ads will have to fit in a 3-inch by 3.5-inch rectangle (7.62 by 8.89 cm), which is slightly larger than the size of the "pocket" sponsorship space allowed by the NBA since the 2017-18 season (2.5 inches by 2.5 inches, see below).

The NHL has already allowed teams to have helmet sponsors since the 2020-21 season in order to help teams recoup some of the revenue lost from games played behind closed doors. Sponsors appear on both sides of a player's helmet and franchises have the option of choosing one brand for home games and another for away ones.

  • Prudential Financial (finance) and the New Jersey Devils franchise signed the first helmet sponsorship deal in NHL National Hockey League, the North American professional ice hockey league history, a contract that was in effect throughout the 2020-21 season, on 22/12/2020.
