European Top 5: clubs lost more than €2bn in matchday revenue in 2020-21 (KPMG)

"The 2020-21 season was played in empty stadia: the Premier League allowed fans to return for the last two rounds of fixtures, but the other major leagues did not decide to do so. Thus, it is expected that clubs in the big 5 leagues (Bundesliga, LaLiga Santander, Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Serie A TIM) will make little-to-no income from this source in 2020-21, potentially losing out on over €2bn of matchday revenues combined," announced KPMG Football Benchmark on 24/08/2021.

The football business intelligence platform of the international network of audit and advisory firms KPMG has published " Stadium landscape in the new football season", a forecast for the return of fans to the stadiums in the European Top 5 in 2021-22, as well as an assessment of the March 2020/May 2021 period marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the near complete absence of spectators during matches, which resulted in a sharp decline in clubs' matchday revenues.
